Collection

Water is collected in times of a precipitation surplus, so that it in times of drought can be used for irrigation or industrial purposes. The practices for collecting the water are area specific and can be adjusted to the local situation. Different sources may be combined to provide as much as possible (rain)water for later use.

Tile drainage

Collection of water with the use of tile drainage is interesting in case you possess plots with tile drainage or the possibility. By using existing tile drainage, generally, it is sufficient to connect the drains with a collection drain. By applying this technique, water from your own plot is discharged for storage.

Collection of water with the use of drainage has multiple benefits:

  • Low investment costs by adjusting existing tile drainage;
  • Use of water from the own plot;
  • Reduced leaching of nutrients.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting

A rooftop is an excellent device for retention of water during precipitation events. The water falls on a concentrated surface – the roof – at your own terrain,  which reduces logistic activities to a minimum. By disconnecting the existing downspout, the rainwater can be captured for later use.

Collection of water with the use of rooftop rainwater harvesting has multiple benefits:

  • Low investment costs due to the simple disconnection of the downspout;
  • Availability of the most pure quality of water, related the use of rainwater;
  • Uses the availability of large rooftop surfaces in the agriculture and horticulture.

Paved Surface

Paved surfaces like asphalt, concrete and others, without natural infiltration, are well suitable for rainwater retention. Generally, the water is discharged to the sewage or surface water. By disconnecting the paved surface, the water can be collected en stored for later use. Because of the quality, further purification might be necessary.

Collection of water using paved surfaces has multiple benefits:

  • Optimal use of space;
  • Low investment costs due to the simple disconnection of the paved surface;
  • Combined with rooftop rainwater harvesting, the water volume can be sufficient for e.g. livestock farming.
